Taormina

The station is a must for people visiting Taormina in a trip to the isle of Sicily. it is certainly a city, which should not be crossed hastily.

We advise the visitors to stay in this enchanting place with its relaxed rhythms, because only this way you could taste the different cultures, which had lived here: Hellenistic, with its famous theatre, Roman, Norman, Suevi, Gothic, Catalan, Conventual, Baroque and more. This city is a locality so suggestive because civilization very different had been able to melt so well, that nowadays we can admire an exclusive corner of Sicily for its characteristics. It is not the case that this city is the most known tourist locality of Sicily in the world.

Taormina is a place where you will find a blue sea surrounded by a wild nature and you will also rediscover the tastes of the past. 

Masterpieces

The great development of Taormina is due to its position:  at the Ionic coast and protected by the mountains behind. People coming from Sicily, found this territory and started conquering it up to the mountain Castelmola.

The Roman and Greek domination helped the reconstruction. During the first century BC., Taormina was a colony and had a terrible period from economically and culturally points of view, but at the end of the Byzantine period it became the seat of Arch bishop and capital of the region, instead of Syracuse.

In 1079, the Normans conquered the town and for Taormina a long period of decline started, even though the conquerors took care of a new urban plan. In the XVI century, the Corona family tried to dominate the town, but Taormina won and started a new urban expansion, which lasted till it was conquered and later deprived by this family (XVIII century).

During the IX century, Taormina had a great urban and tourism development, thanks to its wonderful position.
