Old Trapani is a suggestive city that rises above a promontory opposite the Egadi islands. The churches are the most interesting buildings of this ancient area. In particular the cathedral of San Lorenzo (1635) and the church of the College of the Jesuits (1614-40 approx.) which display the vitality of the Baroque architecture of Western Sicily. The Purgatory church (17th century) contains the Mysteries, human-sized wooden statues, used in the procession held on Good Friday. Santa Maria del Gesù contains the Madonna of the Angels by Andrea della Robbia (1435-1525).
